History of New Chumta Tea Estate

When you think of how the Tea cultivation started coming into the picture, you are stuck without a definite backstory. But here, we will help you discover how New Chumta Tea Estate began and went on to become a successful and remarkably advanced business.

This journey starts with the selection of a plot of land in the Terai region where the access of land was granted to Major C.M. Fittzerald. Gradually this land was extended into a vast tea cultivation arena. Back in 1866, New Chumta Tea laid down its first bushes in the soil with the help of Richard Southby to holdings was transferred. According to Southby’s words, the deeds of the land were signed by Major Blair Reid in July 1866. That was when he truly began the clearing of areas to start the plantation of Simul trees. He was able to get it done by January 1867. By 1868, tea was borne which was plucked after August 1868. Gradually, he began to expand the area in possession acre by acre.


By 1889, combining the holding of the foundation companies, the present-day New Chumta Tea Co. Ltd. was found. It revelled in a major uptake within the year 1909 where it acquired an additional 200 acres that belonged to an out garden Subtiguri. At that time, the vast tea cultivation area was set, but no new and advanced provisions were available. Therefore, at a time, a small number of leaves were carried through bullock carts from Subtiguri to the Chumta Factory.


This was done until 1940 and still running strong. The provisions for electricity still utilized gasoline lanterns and water provision was also workable.

Finally, a major turnover changed the face of the New Chumta Tea Estate. This was the time where the old factory was burned down and, in its place, a new and improved setup was gathered. The technology was finally inculcated in the processes. All this began its motion in 1953. Over time, Artificial Irrigation began for the diversion of streams to the fields for best Tea cultivation. This went to expand its reach and gradually became the present-day New Chumta Tea Estate.
